Trails reopen for 2009 on Saturday May 2nd

The Millstone Trails will re-open for the summer on Saturday May 2nd. The snow has finally melted and the trails have dried out nicely. We have been feverishly raking out trails and removing winter debris. Virtually all trails will be clean and ready for riding on the 2nd of May.

An ending and a beginning

Even though it is snowing as I write this, and I’m still hoping for another blizzard, I know what April means. It’s time to rake leaves, wash windows and dust off our bikes. This spring especially, there are plenty of reasons to look forward to mountain biking 2009 at Millstone Hill. The touring center is moving about a mile up the hill to Church Hill Rd. in Websterville. In addition to being much more centrally located, it will also be expanded to include a part-time bike repair shop.

Looking for some new trails to ride? Lots of planning was done last fall and crews will be out in the woods as soon as it’s dry enough to work. Our trails drain quickly, and as usual we are shooting to be open by the first week of May.

So good-bye to a great winter, and welcome spring!

Another Sunny Weekend Coming up

Half price weekend! Stop by the touring center and use the “Honor Box” to pay. We are no longer grooming, but I skied most trails on Wednesday and conditions are still very good. There are a few thin spots and rocks to watch out for, but overall there is plenty of coverage for another weekend of sunny spring skiing and snowshoeing. Call ahead to arrange for rentals. Join us this Sunday at the Lodge at 1PM for our “Women’s Guided Ski or Snowshoe Tour. See you on the trail.

Spring is on its way…

…and it will be arriving at around noon on Saturday. We still have a great base and no bare spots, even through the fields! After a few days of delightful spring skiing conditions earlier this week, we are back to mid-winter weather today. But with plenty of warm March sunshine and temperatures in the mid-forties on Sat. and Sun., the weekend conditions will be fantastic. Just wait for the day to warm up a bit, and you will be skiing or snowshoeing on slightly thawed corn snow. What a great day to pack a trail lunch and make the most of a warm, sunny afternoon. And don’t forget, you’ll have daylight until 7PM now! See you on the trail.

Snow, Rain, Sunshine

Early this week we received over a foot of new, powder snow, and enjoyed divine conditions. Then on Thursday and Friday temps were above freezing and everything thawed and softened. This weekend we’ll have more seasonal temperatures in the 20′s, so the ski conditions will be fast. We’ll break everything up with the groomer and hope for at least a dusting of fresh snow on top. Enjoy the sunshine and the longer days. See you on the trail!

Great Weekend Coming Up

This week, several inches of new snow fell over our deep and firm base. What an improvement over last weekend’s hard and super-fast surface! I was out on the Serenity-Heifer Pasture Loop yesterday, and it was snowing hard and 25 degrees at 6PM. With temps in the 20’s and some sunshine, we will enjoy near perfect conditions for skiing and snowshoeing this weekend. See you on the trail!

The First Thaw of 2009

Above freezing temperatures and rain this week, followed by much colder weather today have resulted in hard packed trails. A trace of fresh snow has fallen overnight and this morning. There is still plenty of snow coverage and trails are open and groomed. With sunny skies expected for the weekend, why not strap on your snowshoes and explore our scenic hilltop views? A Perfect Winter Weekend

The snow conditions are excellent this weekend, and light snow flurries are expected on both Saturday and Sunday. With temperatures in the teens, I don’t think there could be a more perfect winter weekend to grab your skis or snowshoes and enjoy our quiet wooded trails and distant mountain views. Special event on Sunday, January 25th: Guided Ski or Snowshoe Tour for Women; meet at the Lodge on Littlejohn Road at 1PM. Free for MTA members, $5 for non-members.

This cold snap is history

I’m not talking about a January thaw (thank goodness) but this weekend’s temperatures will be in the teens, a big relief from the sub-zeros of the past several days. “Serenity Trail” is especially lovely now that the wet places are all frozen and snowcovered. I was just out on the trail this afternoon and a little light snow was falling, so you can expect fantastic skiing and ‘shoeing this weekend. Enjoy.

The trails have received several inches of fresh, fluffy powder snow this week. Everything has been groomed, and with the sunny weather predicted for this weekend, the skiing and snowshoeing at Millstone Hill will be as good as it gets.
