Bypass completed, all trails now open

We have completed the bypass of the Haul Rd. recently closed by Rock of Ages and as a result all Millstone Trails are now open. Thanks to some significant efforts by volunteers and some help from Rock of Ages we now have a very nice single track leading from the bottom of Roller Coaster to Websterville Rd. From the road you can turn right to get back to the touring center, or by turning left you can access the Abbott’s Run and Rock and Roll trails.

SCREAMING DEMON Now Open

The Jacques brothers, Kevin and Jason, have done it again. The new all down hill trail running alongside Roller Coaster that they have been working on since spring is now ready to ride. We refer to it as Roller Coaster on steroids. They expect to keep tweaking it and improving it as the summer progresses, just as they did with Roller Coaster last year. Screaming Demon is even more challenging that Roller Coaster so Beware.

EXTREME: Millstone’s New Trail Category

We have decided, after much discussion to create a new more technical category for our trails. The new Screaming Demon and our ever popular TNT trails have been designated as Extreme. Riders who chose to take these trails need to be aware that they are committing to a more technically challenging experience than is our norm. We expect to add several more miles of these trails in the future. Ride it if you can!

Significant improvements on Rambler/Scrambler

The volunteers who came out for last Sunday’s trail work day spent the morning derooting and making other improvements to Scrambler. Rambler and Scrambler, two of our oldest trails have always been considered two of our best flow trails and these improvements help make them an even better ride than ever. Joe St. Jean, one of our trails committee members, has constructed a great new technical bridge alternative on Rambler. It’s a great addition to the trail and has gotten great reviews.

Newest maps now highlight our cool spots

The new maps we have just received now indicate the dozen or more cools spots found throughout our network. Look for the snowflake icon on the map when you are on the trail network and just need to chill out a little.

Railroad reopening at Millstone Hill impacts our trail network

Rock of Ages has secured a contract to ship waste granite out of state and will therefore be reactivating the railroad at Millstone Hill. As a result, some trails may be closed for periods of time and others may be rerouted temporarily.

At this time the Pike or Haul Rd. located at the end of Roller Coaster and leading to Websterville Rd. has been declared an active mining area and is off limits. We may be able to cross this road on weekends, but at all other times please stay out of this area! We are in the process of rerouting Roller Coaster through a new single-track access to Websterville Rd., which will need to be used to access the Abbott’s wood area of trails as well. Please be mindful of all closed or keep out signs.

Trails Closed until May 1st!

We’ve closed for the season, a good two weeks earlier than usual. We kept our snow longer than most, but even our high elevation could not spare us from the melt down caused by the unseasonably high temperatures of the last couple of weeks.

(Note: Women’s ski/snowshoe event scheduled for Friday, March 26th has been canceled.)

Time to tune up your bike. There’s been some great early season riding weather already. Just remember to stay on the road for now, as the trails are too soft to ride without damaging them. None of us wants to spend the spring repairing rutted trails.

Projected opening is May 1st for mountain biking and hiking. Check back here for updates.

Spring Skiing Continues

I skied Friday, 3/12, and the conditions were great – still plenty of cover with a soft corn snow surface. The temperature was in the mid-forties. The Mainline – Westside – Serenity loop is groomed, as is the Grand Lookout trail. Heifer Pasture trail is not groomed, but is packed down enough to ski easily when soft. There are just a couple of thin spots, and a few rocks starting to poke through. Snowshoers will find good depth of snow on their narrow, sheltered trails. It’s fine to be in the woods on these lovely days we’ve been having, just wait for the overnight crust to soften.

Corn Snow Weekend

Thanks to last week’s mega-storm, the trails have an abundance of snow. However, the condition of the snow varies greatly as the thermometer rises and falls. When the temperature is above freezing and the sun is high in the sky, the snow softens up, and the skiing is delightful. So unless you feel the need for extreme speed, I suggest waiting until 10am or so before you head out on the trail. The weather report is fabulous – a balmy 44 degree high is predicted for Saturday.
